Standing just 358 metres high, Monte Toro is the top of
Menorca. The Menorcans have always felt a special attraction for this mountain,
to such an extent that they made it into the island’s spiritual centre.
Monte Toro lies in the geographical centre of Menorca, in the district of Es
Mercadal and half way between Maó and Ciutadella. It is the highest point
on the island, and the only place where an aerial view of the countryside can
be seen. The early settlers built a watchtower here, on top of which the present
defence tower was built later, in 1558.
The peak of Monte Toro also houses a sanctuary built in the 17th Century, which
replaced an earlier Gothic one, and which today is inhabited by a community of
Franciscan nuns. In the entrance courtyard, a monument recalls the Menorcans
who emigrated to Florida in the 18th Century.
Its church conserves a curious doorway decorated with two clock faces and two
giant bows. The interior has a single nave, with three chapels on each side.
In one of them is the cave where, according to legend, they discovered the statue
of the Virgin of El Toro, the patron saint of the Menorcans.
The spiritual nature can also be noted outside the building with two more monuments,
the Sagrado Corazón (Sacred Heart) and the one commemorating those who
emigrated to Algeria. The best panoramic view of the island can be seen from
here, with its precipitous northern coast and warm southern coast. If the weather
is fine, it is possible to see the western coast of Mallorca and enjoy a spectacular
sunset.
Nestling at the foot of Monte Toro is Es Mercadal, a very lively, picturesque
town with whitewashed houses and narrow streets. The locality is also known for
its gastronomy, and has a wide range of restaurants where the different typical
dishes can be savoured, which include caldereta (fish stew) or calamares
a la menorquina (Menorcan-style squid), and innovative recipes such as conejo
con higos (rabbit with figs).
Also characteristic of this place are the crespells and amargos,
two kinds of pastries which are very popular. The latter are made with almonds
and both are sold in bakeries and cake shops. They are a real temptation for
the palate.
From Es Mercadal, a road goes up to Monte Toro, whose summit lies three kilometres
away. There is a car park and small bar.
